Linxter, provider of in-the-cloud middleware, partners with VisualGov, a software development firm, to integrate Microsoft Office Communication Server with cloud computing, enabling a server monitoring app to send alerts via phone and IM.

Through partnership with VisualGov Solutions, Linxter has demonstrated the successful combination of Microsoft’s Office Communications Server (OCS) with a cloud app running on Windows® Azure. Harnessing the power of Linxter’s in-the-cloud middleware, VisualGov has integrated a monitoring application with Microsoft Office Communication Server 2007, enabling the system to place phone calls or send instant messages.

The monitoring application, which was developed by Linxter and is currently in beta, keeps tabs on a bank of computer servers and alerts IT staff when certain conditions arise, such as low disk space or a system outage.  Server statuses are registered in the cloud where a VisualGov Solutions’ routine uses OCS to automatically notify staff through the proper medium.  Text messages are sent for less critical problems, while the text-to-speech capability is used to call someone when the problem is more serious.

Keith Kabza, VisualGov Solutions CTO, said “Server monitoring represents just one of many applications that could benefit from combining OCS Presence with instant messaging or traditional phone calls.”  The company believes it will become much more commonplace for applications to reach out and communicate with people as status changes.

Jason Milgram, CEO of Linxter, added “More applications and devices are coming online each day, and it is our mission at Linxter to ensure that they can be enabled for secure and reliable communication. Like Keith, I also look forward to seeing more applications benefit from the combination of Microsoft Office Communication Server and the cloud.”

Linxter’s monitoring application is not yet commercially available; however you can sign up for beta previews at http://monitorgrid.com, or to start integrating your own applications with the cloud right away, you can visit http://linxterdeveloper.com.  For more information from OCS industry experts, or to experiment with OCS technology, please visit http://www.GotUC.Net.
